The New Home Office

Ultrafabrics reps from around the globe chime in on what they’re seeing and hearing in the industry…

Director of Sales, A&D – New York

We’re seeing many companies planning to work from home through January 2021, with others extending that to July. Others are doing combinations of work from home plus in office. Companies are giving allowances for employees to buy furniture. The furniture we’re seeing varies from task seating and desk to sit/stand desks and high-end space saving seating.

Many existing furniture manufacturers have endeavoured to remarket themselves – where previously they would consider themselves as predominantly workplace or hospitality led, they are now refocusing as a residential solution. Functionality and aesthetics are both playing an important role in this new reality. Many want to ensure they are able to retain the high individual aesthetic they have created at home and not compromise this with furniture that doesn’t align – especially as home working looks like it is here to stay. Task chairs, sit/stand desks, acoustic room dividers, space sizing furniture, good lighting, simple storage solutions are all becoming more popular.

I’m finding many of our clients are now working from home, some of these situations may be long term and most people did not plan for this space when they purchased or leased their current living spaces. While everyone would love a spacious home office, many Chicagoans live in smaller apartments or condos, so this plays a factor as well. Tastes may vary, but a clean, well contained space is always appealing.

Most people seem to be of the opinion that home working is going to be here for the foreseeable future and mixing home working with office working for part of the week not far behind. People are starting to adapt their homes to a more permanent working environment, however flexibility seems to be the key to maximise space and optimise multifunctionality.

The general outlook is that there will be a long-term or even permanent hybrid of working from both the office and from home. There are many examples of employers providing employees with allowances for home office furniture purchases. I’m also seeing that there is a focus on ergonomic furniture options for the home (height adjustable desks, task seating) as employee health and safety will be a focus and supported in any work environment

Many furniture manufacturers are positioning their products to be purchased on-line directly from the manufacturer. This business model and distribution channel that has only been utilized by a very small percentage of the contract office furniture industry and I think points to the growing demand for at home office solutions.
